Course Information

Study content and study objectives

Music can be studied as a didactic subject within the subject group of elementary school pedagogy.
This didactic subject offers an education that is strongly related to future teaching practice, with a strong emphasis on practical music-making in schools. In addition, basic knowledge of music history and theory is taught. Furthermore, theoretical references are made to the disciplines of music didactics and psychology that are relevant for future teaching activities. A main objective is a close connection of theory and practice.

The practical music courses of the optional module WP 1/2/3 Music Practice and Music Theory serve as intensive preparation for the practical part of the oral state examination. The students receive vocal lessons as well as lessons in an accompanying instrument and learn to accompany songs in class with and without sheet music. In the seminar Fundamentals of Music Education and Psychology (Module P1 Music Didactics), students acquire theoretical and scientific basic knowledge with regard to the essential models, processes in the fields of music didactics, music education and music psychology. Concrete practical teaching concepts are developed within the framework of teaching simulations. In the seminar, Music Teaching in the Elementary School: Selected Topics on Didactics and Methodology, students deal with central factors of music teaching in relation to the curriculum and professional field. The learning objective is the acquisition of basic competencies for planning, implementing and reflecting on music lessons based on concrete teaching examples.

Music as a didactic subject can be studied without taking an aptitude test. However, a prerequisite for participation in some courses is a confident use of notation (treble and bass clef). Students who play neither guitar nor piano can participate in a preparatory course for guitar. They will learn the basics of guitar playing and can take a regular guitar course in one of the following semesters.

Lesson Content and Methods
Lesson examples range from song development to making music with instruments to listening to music and translating it into movement. They also take into account and offer a variety of opportunities for interdisciplinary learning. This way, students develop, on the one hand, a repertory of ideas and materials for school practice and, on the other hand, a repertoire of suggestions for designing their own lessons.

Prerequisites for earning a certificate:
Regular attendance; planning and practical implementation of a lesson example with short written elaboration.
