Klassische Musik im Musikunterricht

International conference, October 11.-12.th 2018

13.10.2018

For a long time, classical music has been a central topic in music education classrooms around the world. It represented an international music culture that united people worldwide. But the dominance of popular music in students' lives as well as in music classrooms, and the inclusion of the various musical cultures of the world, lead to marginalizing classical music in the music education curriculum. Particularly in international music education, classical music is now a highly contested topic, due to understanding it as elite and Eurocentric musical culture, connected to an approach favoring music for its own sake. The declining popularity of classical music is apparent in public concerts and decrease audiences. In view of these and other developments, reconsidering the meaning of classical music for music education appears to be an important topic for music education internationally.

The conference, which took place from October 11th.-12th. 2018 at the Freie Universität Bozen in Brixen (Italien), was organized in collaboration with the Department of Music Education at LMU Munich.
